The 45th Chennai Book Fair witnessed a massive sale of Rs 15 crore this year. As the fair ended with a footfall of roughly around 15 lakh, the sales of books touched Rs 15 crore which is a huge spike. This was announced by the Book Sellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI)
S. Vairavan, President of BAPASI, revealed that the public response was encouraging and it was far better than last year. Thousands of people flocked to the fair and enthusiastically bought a myriad of books. While the overall sales were encouraging, a few publishers said it was due to some big and popular publications, however, there were many publications that witnessed poor sales.
Kannan Sundaram, a publisher from Kalachuvadu Publications, said the turnout and the sales were good. It was predominantly the youth who bought more books this year as well.
BAPASI secretary SK Murugan added that due to the book fair's weekday schedule this year, more school students attended the event than ever before.
The book fair, which used scheduled for January, got pushed to February-March last year and this year due to COVID-19. Compared to the usual period of 14 days, this year the book fair was held for 19 days, which included three weekends, to attract more crowd.
Vairavan added, "This year, readers purchased a greater number of titles related to skill development, spirituality, language-oriented books, and English novels. The event has grabbed people's attention."
